Playa del Carmen History
Playa del Carmen was discovered only around 15 years ago when people were being ferried between the “main land” and Cozumel. It didn’t take long for people to realize the potential that Playa del Carmen had to offer with its white sandy beaches, clear blue Caribbean Sea, and the lush verdant jungle in the background. Over the next few years, backpackers and hippies took advantage of the quiet and tranquil seaside village. Soon the word was out and more international travelers, as well as investors discovered Playa del Carmen and the Rivera Maya. Gone are the days when Playa del Carmen was a sleepy little fishing village perfectly perched on some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.
